Demolition of the Carola Bridge

Dresden. Following the collapse of one span of the Carolabrücke bridge in Dresden on 11 September 2024, a Sennebogen 870E Demolition was deployed to bring down the two remaining spans in a controlled manner. Once the collapsed section of the bridge had been cleared, two excavators began removing the road surfaces and deck slabs from the remaining bridge spans. A gravel bed had been constructed in the River Elbe beforehand to safely catch the falling debris. Over the course of the day, the two remaining bridge spans were brought down in a controlled manner, one after the other, onto the gravel bed. From there, a total of ten excavators broke up the rubble, which was then removed by lorries and tractors.
EAG-Berthold undertakes demolition work in Dresden
For the demolition of the Carolabrücke, our client EAG-Berthold from Colditz hired the Sennebogen 870E Demolition and an NPK GH-15 hydraulic breaker from Schlüter-RENT. Founded in 2015, the company specialises in earthworks and demolition and already has experience in bridge demolition.

Efficient demolition with the Sennebogen 870E
A long-reach demolition machine was used for the current project; with an operating weight of 117 tonnes and a reach of up to 36 metres, it more than met the demanding requirements. Thanks to the cab’s ability to be raised and tilted, the operator has an excellent view of the work area and the surroundings of the bridge at all times. Another highlight of the 870E Demolition is the telescopic undercarriage, which ensures both a narrow transport width and high stability during operation.

A powerful addition: the GH-15 hydraulic breaker for precise demolition
To ensure efficient demolition, EAG-Berthold also hired the GH-15 hydraulic breaker from manufacturer NPK via Schlüter-RENT. The nitrogen-powered piston delivers consistent, maximum energy per blow. The integrated shock absorber system reduces vibrations, enhances operator comfort and simultaneously protects the machine, thereby extending the excavator’s service life. Thanks to the quick and easy chisel change, the GH-15 can be flexibly adapted to various tasks. For this application, the hydraulic breaker was the ideal complement to the 870E Demolition – powerful, efficient and reliable.

On-site coordination and support
EAG-Berthold was supported by the RENT team from Elxleben, where Uwe Wehling acted as the client’s point of contact. Technicians from the after-sales service team in Radeburg also assisted with the assembly of the Sennebogen 870E – a great example of collaboration between the two branches.
